Combidrive designed and built this prototype heavy duty strimmer on wheels in the light of short comings experienced on a similar mass produced machine.
Drive comes from a 5 Hp four stroke engine connected to the cutting rotor by an SPA vee belt. An idler bearing (see photo) enables the belt to be tensioned and adjusted as required. A centrifugal clutch is fitted to the engine crankshaft (see photo). The machine will handle cutting line up to 3.9mm dia and gives a cutting width of approx 20".
A single throttle control combined with the centrifugal clutch enables the engine to be started, idle without driving the cutter and automatically engage as the engine speed is increased. Most alternative machines employ a lever operated idler to engage the belt, this mechanism was found to seize up on a regular basis.
